Dublin Airport opened in January 1940 when an Aer Lingus Lockheed 14 departed for Liverpool. Over 80 years on, our mission is to continue the legacy of anticipating the future and create the vision for how Dublin Airport will serve Ireland over the coming decade. Dublin Airport’s national strategic role is to deliver high-quality international connectivity for Ireland and become a leading European secondary hub.
More than 400 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport since that first flight took off in 1940. The old terminal, which is a listed building, is still partially used for daily passenger operations and many of the internal design features of the building have been retained as a reminder of those early days of aviation.
CHALLENGE
LAML was contracted by Clare Civil Ltd to undertake saw cutting and sealing of new and existing Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) bays, existing PQC slab repairs and removal of existing defective PQC bays.
Our subcontract package consisted of:
7,157m of saw cut and seal in new PQC construction
30,000m of routing out of existing sealant
30,000m of sealing existing PQC joints
13 PQC slab repairs using Maxicrete
Coring of existing defective PQC bays in preparation for removal
BENEFITS
Saw cuts are used to create control joints in concrete, these joints help manage pavement cracking that occurs due to shrinkage. The cuts are made at a predetermined spacing after the concrete has obtained sufficient strength, and before internal cracking begins. The flexible joint sealant allows the concrete pavement to expand and contract without causing damage to the pavement structure.
