Bristol Airport Runway & Taxiway General Maintenance
CLIENT
Bristol Airport, at Lulsgate Bottom, on the northern slopes of the Mendip Hills, in North Somerset, is the commercial airport serving the city of Bristol, England, and the surrounding area. It is 7 nautical miles southwest of Bristol city centre.
Opened in May of 1929 Bristol Airport, has approximately 2,500 people working at the airport for around 50 organisations, and employees over 270 staff. The airport is working hard to achieve net zero airport opers by 2030.
CHALLENGE
Our client had a package of surface maintenance and patching repairs to be carried out over a period of 5 /6 shifts in March of 2021 and 2022.
LAML acted in the role of Principal Contractor and our Project Manager was closely involved prior to works commencing. This was to ensure all planning, programming and site compound set up and materials storage areas were secure and accessible for the works ensuring maximum productivity each shift.
Our winter maintenance works packages have included:
Runway day joint saw cut and sealing
Runway & Taxiway Maxi-Flex/Armourlay repairs
High-Performance joint installation
Runway Maxi-Crete patch repairs
Runway & Taxiway Asphalt Patching Works
Manhole repair using Iron-Guard
Line Marking reinstatement
Working mainly on night-time limited possession periods, we worked collaboratively with our Client to ensure that Airport Operational certainty was maintained at all times.
Dedicated set-down areas were allocated for the surfacing personnel, plant and waste materials. Haul routes and traffic management plans were implemented with security control put in place for the required night-time access.
Works were programmed in sequence to allow patching works to be undertaken at the same time as the saw cutting and sealing, high-performance joint works and Maxi-Flex repairs.
Iron-Guard was used to repair a repetitive failure on a manhole cover in the Taxiway. This homogenous repair system offers longevity and flexibility compared to traditional manhole repair methodology.
Once all repairs were completed any line marking was reinstated using one of our established supply chain partners.
BENEFITS
By repairing and patching surface infrastructure the airport is able to extend the life of its critical assets delaying the need for a full repair intervention. The works are carried out in the winter months when the airport is quieter thereby reducing disruption to asset availability and ensuring the airport revenue is not impacted by the reactive maintenance works.
“Bristol Airport has a long-standing relationship with Lagan Airport Maintenance Ltd and has completed many projects together over many years.
LAML’s helpful and flexible approach to both the planning and execution of the recent runway maintenance package ensured the works were completed to an extremely high standard, on time and on budget with practically zero operational impact.
I would have no hesitation in recommending LAML for work of this nature anywhere where excellent value, high-quality work is required in high-risk operational landscapes.”
